Collection: Frank Cooper's - Original Oxford Marmalade Since 1874

Oxford marmalade is the dark, bitter, coarse cut style, first made in 1874 when Sarah Jane Cooper boiled up a batch of Seville oranges in her Oxford kitchen and sold the surplus in the family shop.

In stock: Fine Cut Oxford Marmalade 454g and the Vintage Extra Coarse Cut 454g.

This is not the sweet orange jelly in an American squeeze bottle. It is sharp, dark and meant for hot buttered toast at breakfast. We import the jars from Britain and keep them on the shelf in Massachusetts, ready to post.

Oxford marmalade is the dark, bitter, thick cut end of the marmalade scale, and it is a long way from the sweet orange jelly most Americans have tried. Frank Cooper's is the original version, and it is the one marmalade drinkers of strong tea tend to settle on.

Thick Cut, Vintage and How Bitter Is Right
Thick cut means large pieces of Seville peel and a deeper, more bitter flavour. The vintage version is darker again. If you are new to it, spread it thinner than you would jam and pair it with buttered toast rather than a sweet bread. A jar lasts a long time in the fridge once opened.

FAQ

Q1: What makes Oxford marmalade different?
It is darker, thicker cut and more bitter than standard orange marmalade.

Q2: What are Seville oranges?
A bitter orange variety used for marmalade rather than eating, which is what gives the preserve its edge.

Q3: How should marmalade be stored?
In a cupboard unopened, and in the fridge once opened. Use a clean knife each time.
