Flahavan's - Irish Porridge Oats and Steel Cut Oatmeal

Flahavan's has been milling oats in Kilmacthomas, County Waterford, for over 200 years, and Irish porridge is a slower, creamier proposition than American instant oatmeal. Made properly it takes a pan, milk and about five minutes.

In stock now: Irish Porridge Oats 500g, Organic Porridge Oats 1kg, Organic Jumbo Oat Flakes 1kg, Progress Oatlets 1kg and Irish Steel Cut Oatmeal 793g.

Steel cut is the chewiest and takes longest; jumbo flakes hold their shape in granola and flapjacks; standard porridge oats are the everyday breakfast. A pinch of salt in the pan is not optional in Ireland. Imported by us and shipped from Massachusetts.

Buy Irish Porridge Oats Online in the USA
Porridge and oatmeal are not quite the same dish. Irish porridge is cooked in a pan with milk or water until it is creamy, salted rather than sugared at the start, and eaten hot. It is a slower breakfast than an instant sachet and it tastes like it.

Steel Cut, Jumbo Flakes and Standard Oats
Steel cut oatmeal is the whole grain chopped rather than rolled, chewiest and slowest to cook. Jumbo flakes are large and hold their shape, which is what you want in granola and flapjacks. Standard porridge oats are the quick everyday option. The 1kg bags are the household size.

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between steel cut and rolled oats?
Steel cut oats are chopped whole grains and stay chewy. Rolled oats are flattened and cook much faster into a softer porridge.

Q2: How do you make Irish porridge?
Simmer oats in milk or water with a pinch of salt, stirring, until creamy. Add sugar, honey or cream at the table.

Q3: Are oats gluten free?
Oats are naturally gluten free but are often milled alongside wheat. Check the individual pack if this matters to you.
